What is better than sweet, thick, and gooey cinnamon rolls? NOTHING! It is very hard to resist buying a cinnamon roll as the sweet aroma and cinnamon scent starts to activate those taste buds and salivation starts. So, what is it that makes the cinnamon roll so great? Could it be the soft dough, the sweetness along with the dough, the raisins, or the cinnamon flavor? YES, you guessed it, all of the above!!!! Let’s get going on making your very own cinnamon rolls, as you will no longer need to buy these sweet delights anymore!
Ingredients: milk, yeast, sugar, butter, egg, salt, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, cream cheese,
powdered sugar and vanilla extract, raisins or cranberries
Liquid and dry measuring cup – used to measure liquids and dry ingredients
Stand mixer with dough hook attachment – used to mix and knead dough
Plastic wrap – used to cover mixing bowl with dough and keep the dough at a warm temperature
Baking dish – to place cinnamon rolls once shaped for baking in the oven
Sifter – to remove lumps from confectioners sugar
Bowls – used to mix ingredients together
Cutting board – used to roll out dough
Rolling pin – to flatten and shape dough
Sewing thread or bench scraper – Used to cut dough
Rubber spatula – used to spread frosting and remove baked cinnamon rolls
- When making any type of yeast dough, allow enough time for the dough to rise unless using quick rise yeast.
- Allow the dough to rise twice, once after making dough and secondly, prior to baking the shaped cinnamon rolls.
- All of the liquids for yeast dough should be warm in temperature which allows the yeast to activate.
- Adding raisins, cranberries or nuts can easily be incorporated into (prior to rolling) or on top of the dough.
Step One – In a liquid measuring cup, add yeast then add milk. Remember to have milk at a warm temperature. After combining the yeast and milk together, wait for ten minutes and watch the yeast activate. It should begin to look similar to a foamy texture.
Step Two – Add yeast mixture into the stand mixer bowl with attached dough hook, add egg, melted butter, sugar, and salt. While mixing, gradually add in flour and beat dough until a soft dough forms.
Step Three – Using cooking spray, spray a large bowl and place the dough into the bowl. Cover with plastic wrap until the dough has doubled in size.
Step Four – While dough is rising, prepare your ingredients for the cinnamon roll filling. In a medium sized bowl, add brown sugar, cinnamon, melted butter and milk. Mix until all ingredients are combined. Set aside.
Step Five – Using a large cutting board, lightly coat with flour and place dough onto the cutting board. Punch down and knead dough for five minutes until smooth.
Step Six – Roll out dough with a rolling pin into a large rectangular shape. (Coat rolling pin with flour to prevent the dough from sticking)
Step Seven – Add filling on top of dough and spread the filling to cover the entire dough. (In this step, you can add nuts or raisins with your filling.
Step Eight – Using both hands, starting at the wider edge, roll dough tightly until reaching the other end of the dough.
Step Nine – Prepare a baking dish by lightly spraying with cooking spray. Set aside.
Step Ten – Using a long piece of thread or a bench scraper, cut dough in half. If using sewing thread, place thread underneath the dough and pull each end up from the sides. Crisscross the thread pulling all the way until the dough is cut. Easy right, you got this!!!! (check out video) Each half should be six cinnamon rolls, placed into a prepared baking dish as you cut. Let the dough rise again for 20 minutes in the prepared dish.
Step Eleven – Pour milk and butter mixture over the dough until evaporated. Bake in a preheated oven for 15 – 20 minutes. Start checking on the cinnamon rolls from 15 minutes into the oven. Insert toothpick or knife in the thickest part of the dough to check for doneness, if it comes out clean, the cinnamon rolls are done. If there is raw dough on your toothpick, add the additional five minutes to cook time.
Step Twelve – While the cinnamon rolls are baking, prepare your cream cheese icing by using a large bowl and combining cream cheese, sifted powdered sugar, vanilla extract and butter. Mix until all ingredients are combined. Set aside.
Step Thirteen – Using a rubber spatula, spread cream cheese icing over the top of the cinnamon rolls.
There you have it, the best thickest, most gooey cinnamon rolls ever!!!!!
